Snowy Mountains................in a blizzard

Delightful trip down the coast and then inland led us to Thredbo Diggings Campsite in the National Park where we hunkered down with the wombats and a good deal of chilly weather.
In the morning we put on all the clothes we had (thank goodness my daughter had convinced me to take my touque and mitts) as we joined the early morning skiers on the ski shuttle to Mt Kosciuszko. They are certainly super efficient about getting to the ski hill and leave their cars completely ready to hit the slopes. Poles and skis on the side of the shuttle and skiboots on their feet. No changing at the base for them.
We took the quad to the top of Mt K which as you probably know is the highest mountain in Australia and where the legend of the Man from Snowy River arose. (Am sure I saw him there too.)
The previous day they had been skiing in T shirts but today was a blizzard and quite exciting watching the children's ski competition unfold. We of course went into The Eagles Nest - the highest restaurant in Australia and had wonderful coffee and pancakes with blueberry sauce. We sat around the wood stove and chatted to real live Australians. They are a hardy bunch as two sets of them had been out camping overnight at the top there. It seems lots of them do it but they recognise that although it gets cold there it is nothing like Canadian winters and they consider Canadians really tough to do it in our weather.
What was especially interesting for us of course was to learn that they are now able to ski for much longer in the season because of their computerised Canadian Made Snow Making Machines which have enabled the natural snow at the top of the mountain to be joined with the made snow at the lower parts of the mountain and this keeps them skiing for much longer. Way to go Canada. Great day
