Ever onwards

It is quite difficult to remember all that we have done in the correct order as I don't have my book journal with me at the moment but here i am with a few minutes to spare on this machine so I'll do my best.

The group on the Trek was 13 strong and the number of young people travelling the world for long periods of time is truly amazing. There were young people from Sweden, America, Ireland, England, Germany and us Canadians. They have all had such interesting experiences, many of them have already volunteered or been on several such wanderlust trips. It was an eye opener for me I must say.

We recovered in Cuzco and then left for Puno by bus enjoying the wonderful countryside and taking time to see the Floating Islands on Lake Titicaca peopled by the Uros people. The y live on these tine islands made of Totaru reeds and they make their boats from them too as well as eat them and make theri houses from them. They now, as well as fishing , make crafts to sell to the tourists. they do not look healthy as they are all quite large but given the few square feet within which they live I am not surprised. We looked around Puno but really do not feel that we were fair to it as Mick had stomach flu while we were there and spent a good deal of time recuperating.

Due to this turn of events we decided to cancel the trip to la Paz in Bolovia a real sadness as it is said to be a wonderful city. However we didn't need to be sick any longer so when we felt improved we headed up to Arequipa and the Colca Canyon with its Condors. Having been fortunate to have visited the canyons of Utah and Arizona I would be lying to say that I was impressed by Colca. It doesn't come close to those in the States I dear but the drive up into the volcanoes of the area and to see the Vicunas, Llamas and Alpacas was fascinating as much of the landscapes looked like a moonscape perhaps from the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions they have experienced. Arequipa has a lovely Plaza like Cuzco so we enjoyed that too and then headed off to see the Nazca lines which I am sure you can find on the internet and about which I knew nothing. What a strange phenomenon and it was wonderful to see them from the air in a tiny 5 seater. It was a wonderful experience and the history which surrounds it is even more fascintating as some consider that UFOs are responsible.

From Nasca to Lima where we are now.... Noisy, loud, busy, crowded polluted but with many superb buildings and such an array of vendors on the streets ..... from passport photographers to food of all sorts to shoe laces to peanuts to shoe shine boys and girls to sweet sellers you name it ...it is certainly here on the streets of Lima. I am now on my way out to the street to see what else I can see and then up the Pacific coast to Ecuador where I hope to catch upwith you all again.
